Guilt, Free Will, and Determinism

Throughout the story, Amir is plagued by guilt. He constantly thinks about his actions, is bothered by them, but doesn’t seem to know how to resolve the situation until Rahim Khan gives him a way.

When Hassan returns with the kite, Amir pretends to ask him where he has been. “Did he know, I knew? And if he knew, then what would I see if I did look in his eyes? Blame? Indignation? Or, God forbid, what I feared most: guileless devotion? That, most of all, I couldn’t bear to see.” (p.83) To see a reflection of Hassan’s loyalty would simply magnify Amir’s guilt.

As Amir’s guilt multiplies, he becomes aware that Rahim Khan also knows the truth.
